As a spiritual
director I am drawn to work with people who long to be in a deep and inspiring relationship with the mystery some of us call
God. For more on my philosophy of spiritual direction please visit my website at www.teresablythe.net
One of my favorite quotes comes from
theologian Howard Thurman:
Don’t
ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is
people who have come alive.
In spiritual direction,
we focus on coming alive by:
- Taking steps
to become awake and aware of the Source of Life
-
Appreciating this life force
-
Asking where this awareness and appreciation is leading (also known as discernment)
I work with people from a variety of religious and spiritual backgrounds—and
some with no particular background in faith. My own journey has centered on progressive Christianity with a special fondness
for the peace traditions (Quakers and Mennonites), Ignatian spirituality (Jesuits) and meditation techniques from Buddhism.
I am a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC), spent a number of years as a Presbyterian (PCUSA) and I work for the Redemptorist
Order at the Hesychia School of Spiritual Direction. So I live and work in a multi-faith context. My training and background
for spiritual direction comes from San Francisco Theological Seminary where I received a Master of Divinity and a Diploma
in the Art of Spiritual Direction in 2000.
I am wholeheartedly
open and affirming of gay, lesbian, bi, and transgender persons.
